When purchasing any blanket for your horse, proper fit is essential and should never be overlooked. Even the most advanced blanket with all the best features can do more harm than good if it doesn’t fit correctly.
The good news is that achieving a proper fit isn’t difficult—here are our top tips:
Before heading to your local tack store, measure your horse using a tape measure. Start at the center of your horse’s chest and measure straight back to the point of the buttocks where the blanket should end.
Horse blankets are sized in centimeters, inches, or feet and inches, so be sure to double-check the sizing system. For example, a 66" blanket is not the same as a 6'6" blanket.
Once you’ve purchased the blanket, take it home and try it on your horse over a clean sheet or lightweight summer sheet, keeping all tags attached. If the blanket fits properly, you can remove the tags and begin using it. If it doesn’t fit, you may be able to return it to the retailer, provided it remains in saleable condition—be sure to confirm the store’s return policy at the time of purchase.
